The Rocks Markets: Days, Opening Hours and What to Expect

The Rocks Markets run three days a week. Friday is 10am to 3pm, Saturday and Sunday are 10am to 5pm, and entry is free. The weekend market spreads across George Street, Playfair Street and Jack Mundey Place; the Friday market is smaller and stays off George Street.

Below are the days and streets, what each market is actually like, what you can buy, how to get there without a car, and the special editions worth planning around. Details were checked against the official programme in October 2026.

Market Days and Hours

Day Hours Where What it is like
Friday 10am to 3pm Jack Mundey Place, Playfair Street, Atherden Street Smaller, street food led, built around the lunchtime crowd
Saturday 10am to 5pm George Street, Playfair Street, Jack Mundey Place The full market, busiest from late morning
Sunday 10am to 5pm George Street, Playfair Street, Jack Mundey Place The same footprint, usually a slower pace

Hours and dates are set by The Rocks and can change around public holidays and festivals, so confirm on the official market page before you travel across town.

Friday Market or Weekend Market?

They are not the same event in different sizes. The Friday market is a lunch market. It sits on Playfair Street and Jack Mundey Place, leans towards street food and quick gifts, and finishes at 3pm. If you work in the city or you are passing through on a weekday, that is the one you will hit.

The weekend market is the one people travel for. It runs down George Street as well, carries the full set of makers, and brings live music and demonstrations with it. Saturday is the busiest day of the three.

Where the Markets Are

The market occupies the pedestrian streets at the northern end of George Street, which puts it between Circular Quay and the Harbour Bridge. Circular Quay station and the ferry wharves are a few minutes' walk, and that is how most people arrive.

Driving is the hard way to do it. The Rocks has very little parking and what exists fills early on a Saturday, so the train or a ferry is the better plan. If you are driving in anyway, the guide to parking near the Opera House covers the closest options and what they cost.

From the Walsh Bay piers it is about a ten minute walk along Hickson Road, which makes the markets and the piers an easy pairing on the same afternoon.

What You Can Buy

The market is built around makers and small producers rather than resellers, so the mix skews handmade and small batch. Expect:

  • Art and prints: original paintings, illustrations and handcrafted textiles.
  • Jewellery: resin, metal, macrame and glass, usually made by the person selling it.
  • Fashion and accessories: clothing, headpieces and naturally dyed scarves.
  • Homewares: sustainable and handmade pieces, scented soaps and prints.
  • Stationery and small gifts: the practical end, good for something to post overseas.
  • Wellness: remedies and small batch skincare.

Stalls rotate, so the mix changes week to week. If you saw something you liked and did not buy it, there is no guarantee the same stall is back next Saturday.

Eating at the Markets

Food is a large part of the appeal. Gourmet street food, dumplings, skewers, international dishes, vegan options, desserts and artisanal chocolate all turn up across the three days, and the Friday market is weighted towards it.

It is grazing food, not a sit down lunch. Dawes Point Park, under the Harbour Bridge at the end of Hickson Road, is where most people take it, and it is the best free picnic spot in the precinct.

Live Music, Yoga and Demonstrations

Each weekend brings live music and DJs, and some stalls run live demonstrations of how the work is made. There is also free yoga on Sunday mornings under the Harbour Bridge, which is worth knowing about if you want the market quiet and the morning useful.

The Best Time to Go

  • Arrive at 10am. The first hour is the calmest, and it is the only way to talk to stallholders properly.
  • Pick Sunday over Saturday if crowds bother you. Same stalls, slower pace.
  • Spring and autumn are the best weather. Winter is quieter and easier for browsing.
  • Light rain is fine. Stalls trade under canopies, although a serious storm can see some pack down early.
  • Allow about two hours. That is enough to walk the full footprint, eat something and still have the afternoon.

Special Editions Through the Year

The market programme carries several seasonal events worth planning around:

  • Christmas in July: a night market running in mid July, free to enter.
  • Ghost Festival: the Halloween edition on Playfair Street, late October into the first weekend of November.
  • December trading: the market extends its season and trades later in the lead up to Christmas.
  • Vivid Sydney, Fringe on The Rocks, St Patrick's Day and Easter: the market runs its usual daytime hours while the precinct programme happens around it.

Dates move year to year, and December hours in particular are confirmed close to the season, so check the official programme rather than trusting a date you read in an older article.

What Else to Do in The Rocks

The markets are the busiest thing in The Rocks, but they are a couple of hours of a day that can easily take six. The sandstone laneways, Observatory Hill, the Argyle Cut and the museums are all within a few blocks. For the full precinct, see the guide to places to visit in and around The Rocks.

Where to Eat After the Markets

Market food is good for grazing and poor for a proper sit down, so most people want a table afterwards. Elements Bar & Grill Walsh Bay is on Pier 8/9 at 23 Hickson Road, roughly ten minutes on foot from the market, with the harbour beside the table.

Oysters, charcoal grilled steak and share plates sit on the a la carte menu, and a late afternoon table works well once the market winds down at 5pm.
