Vivid 2026 in Barangaroo: Attractions, Food and More

Barangaroo is one of the strongest precincts on the Vivid Sydney 2026 Light Walk. The 6.5-kilometre route passes directly through the waterfront, and for 2026 the precinct anchors two hero artworks: Molecule of Light at Walumil Lawns and Obstacle at Exchange Place and Wulugul Walk.

Surrounding these centrepieces, the relocated Vivid Fire Kitchen on Stargazer Lawn and a dense cluster of installations across the reserve, the sea wall, and the boardwalk make Barangaroo one of the most rewarding stretches of the entire route.

Lights switch on at 6:00pm each evening and run until 11:00pm throughout the festival, which runs from 22 May to 13 June 2026.

For the full festival overview, the Vivid Sydney 2026 Guide and Highlights of Vivid Sydney 2026 cover everything across Light, Music, Minds, and Food.

The Barangaroo Light Walk Installations

Molecule of Light (Walumil Lawns, Barangaroo Ave)

Molecule of Light is the centrepiece of the Barangaroo precinct and the tallest installation in Vivid Sydney 2026 history. Created by revered British artist Chris Levine, it stands 23 metres tall on three metal legs at Walumil Lawns with a 6.5-tonne meteorite at its centre, visible from Balmain and Chatswood. By day, nine layers of UV-reactive paint swirl and shift as they catch the sun. By night, a stunning laser production brings the cosmos to the Barangaroo sky, moving in sync with the Earth's rotation.

What sets Molecule of Light apart from pure spectacle is what it does at close range. The meteorite continuously emits a 528hz tone, known as the frequency of love on the ancient Solfeggio scale, which is believed to carry healing properties. The combination of awe-inspiring scale and serene sound induces a meditative state that lingers after you walk away.

It is the installation most directly associated with Elements Bar and Grill Walsh Bay, which sits a short walk away on Hickson Road. For anyone finishing dinner at Walsh Bay and stepping out onto the harbourfront, Molecule of Light is visible from the pier. Worth seeing both up close in the reserve and from a distance on the water.

River of Fire (Stargazer Lawn, 27 Hickson Road)

Directly above the Vivid Fire Kitchen on Stargazer Lawn at 27 Hickson Road, River of Fire is a shimmering canopy of 160 custom-made LED tubes created by LA art and design studio Liquid PXL. The installation forms a quietly mesmerising river of flame overhead, where smoky aromas from the fire pits below rise to meet the glow above. It is one of three Liquid PXL works on this year's Light Walk, alongside Electric Dandelions and Lumiverse Transporter further south toward Darling Harbour.

Peekaboo Parliament (Walumil Lawns, Barangaroo Ave)

Peekaboo Parliament is an interactive all-ages installation on Walumil Lawns, created by an Australian artist. Slumbering owls watch from above and wake at random to scan the forest floor: freeze the moment their eyes open, or you start again from the beginning. Make it through and a kaleidoscopic surprise awaits at the inner sanctum. The combination of game mechanics and glowing figures makes it one of the most engaging works in the precinct for groups and families.

Mycelium Network (Walumil Lawns, Barangaroo Ave)

Mycelium Network is an immersive bioluminescent light environment at Walumil Lawns, created by UK artist Stevie Thompson. The work is inspired by the underground communication networks of fungi, where nearby mushrooms share the same living mycelium: a root-like network of fungal strands that absorbs energy and passes information between itself, trees, and other plants. Thompson recreates this hidden world with a custom-made glowing fibre-optic network strung between the trees of the reserve, pulsing with light and signals that reveal how an entire ecosystem thrives beneath our feet.

Flea Circus (Sea Wall Lawn, Barangaroo)

Flea Circus is located on Sea Wall Lawn, Barangaroo, created by Dutch designers Studio Toer, Vivid Sydney favourites who previously brought Fish Are Jumping (2023), Bloom (2022), and Firefly Garden (2019) to the festival. The work is an ode to the 19th and early 20th century flea circuses of Europe, where crowds watched tiny bugs appear to dance, sword-fight, and play instruments. Some shows used real trained fleas; others relied entirely on illusion, magnets, and the power of suggestion. Much like those original shows, Flea Circus invites the viewer to complete the illusion themselves, neon bug dancing and all.

Letter (Bond Building, 52 Hickson Road, Millers Point)

Letter is a 10-metre-long interactive wall of 30 waterproof touchscreens installed at the Bond Building at 52 Hickson Road, Millers Point. Each screen displays a sealed envelope. Tap one to discover a secret note left by a stranger, then leave a message of your own: a well-wish, a question, a joke, or a poem. Created by Chinese artist Yannesi Siu, Letter operates as a digital whisper-chain that turns a moment of curiosity into a small act of human connection. It is the most intimate and quietly moving installation in the precinct, worth seeking out between the larger spectacles nearby.

Constellations (Nawi Cove, Hickson Road)

Constellations hovered above the waves of Nawi Cove on Hickson Road, created by Belgium's renowned Studio Lemercier. An abstract, geometric 3D projection is cast onto a cloud of mist above the water, making it appear as a hologram from another universe, rippling through empty air. The journey travels across planets and stars to the very limits of the universe, accompanied by atmospheric electronica from UK musician Paul Jebanasam. Studio Lemercier apply a leave-no-trace environmental principle to all their work, meaning the spectacle leaves its impact on audiences but not on the Earth.

Obstacle (Exchange Place and Wulugul Walk)

Stretching 45 metres left to right at Exchange Place and Wulugul Walk, Obstacle is the longest installation in Vivid Sydney 2026 and one of the longest ever featured in the festival's history. Created by Melbourne design studio REELIZE, it is both a barrier and a beacon: blocks of luminous mesh create a hypnotic corridor where patterns glow, flow, and glide across screens synced to a radiant soundtrack. Walking through it is one of the most immersive single experiences on the entire Light Walk route. The name is intentional: a reminder that a perceived roadblock is often a source of exploration, creativity, and momentum.

Electric Dandelions (Exchange Place and Wulugul Walk)

Electric Dandelions is a series of 20 sculptures standing 8.5 metres tall at Exchange Place and Wulugul Walk, also created by Liquid PXL. During the day they stand still, towering above the walkway. At night, LED animations transform the petals into suspended fireworks that burst and disappear across the precinct, lasting all night until 11:00pm. The installation draws on the observation that fireworks look like flower petals at the moment of explosion: two forms of ephemeral beauty sharing the same shape.

Sunrise (Crown Boardwalk, Barangaroo)

Sunrise is positioned on Crown Boardwalk, Barangaroo, created by a Chinese artist. The installation showcases a hyper-vibrant time-lapse of an imagined Sydney Harbour sunrise, and the audience controls it: a simple ride on a see-saw determines the pace. The faster you go, the faster the sun rises or sets. It is a playful, kinetic experience that rewards physical participation and is one of the lighter and more joyful works on the walk.

Point of No Return (Pier Pavilion, 3 Barangaroo Ave)

Point of No Return is housed inside the Pier Pavilion at 3 Barangaroo Ave, created by Norwegian artist Anastasia Isachsen, whose country faces unprecedented arctic melting. Crystalline blues and white swirl across a 6-metre-diameter cylindrical LED screen, drawing visitors in. Step closer and the colours melt into a destructive storm. Step back and the ice is restored, for now. A LIT Lighting Design Award winner, the installation uses motion sensors and a score by Norwegian composer Nils Petter Molvær to ask an urgent question about climate: are we at the point of no return, or is there still hope? It is the most conceptually substantial work on the Barangaroo stretch and worth pausing at rather than walking past quickly.

Vivid Fire Kitchen at Stargazer Lawn

For 2026, the Vivid Fire Kitchen has moved to its new permanent home on Stargazer Lawn at Barangaroo Reserve, at 27 Hickson Road. It runs every night of the festival from 6:00pm to 11:00pm, free to enter.

The Fire Kitchen brings together Australia's top pitmasters, chefs, mixologists, and performers for open-fire cooking demonstrations, tastings, talks at the Food For Thought stage, and live music under the open-air marquee overlooking Sydney Harbour. The menu changes across the festival, with themed nights and one-off collaborations throughout the 23-night run. A curated selection of NSW wines is available at the main bar throughout the festival.

The River of Fire canopy directly overhead and the surrounding cluster of installations across Walumil Lawns make Vivid Fire Kitchen one of the most visually immersive free experiences in the precinct.

Getting to Barangaroo for Vivid Sydney

Public transport is strongly recommended. Barangaroo Metro Station sits beneath the northern end of Hickson Road and is fully accessible via lifts. Wynyard Station is a short walk via the tunnel under the precinct. Bus routes 324, 325, and 311 service Hickson Road directly, connecting to major transport hubs across the city. Road closures and heavy crowds make driving impractical during the festival period.

Where to Eat and Drink Near the Barangaroo Installations

Elements Bar and Grill Walsh Bay at Pier 8/9, Hickson Road, is the natural dining destination for the Barangaroo precinct. The venue sits directly on the harbourfront, a short walk from Molecule of Light at Walumil Lawns and the Vivid Fire Kitchen at Stargazer Lawn, and the kitchen covers premium steaks, Wagyu cuts, the 72-hour sous vide beef short rib, pastas, and seafood.

For groups building a Vivid Sydney evening around the Barangaroo installations, booking dinner at Walsh Bay before the lights switch on at 6:00pm, or after walking the precinct, gives the evening a proper anchor point.

Reservations are recommended across all festival nights, particularly Fridays and Saturdays. Book your Vivid Sydney dinner at Elements Walsh Bay before the festival fills up.
