Please note: 11th June is the last day of Vivid Fireworks (Sky Symphony- Laser, Music, Fireworks) happening over the darling harbour as announced on Vivid's official instagram page.

Vivid Sydney 2026 runs from 22 May to 13 June, and while the Light Walk gets most of the attention, the fireworks are one of the most spectacular parts of the festival. Before you plan your night, it is worth clarifying what "the fireworks" actually means, because Vivid has two separate displays and they are very different in how you see them.

When People Say "Vivid Fireworks", They Usually Mean Darling Harbour

For most people heading to the festival, "the fireworks" means the display at Darling Harbour. These are part of Sky Symphony, a laser, music and fireworks show over Cockle Bay. It began the festival as a laser and music production, and after the Star-Bound drone show was pulled from the program, fireworks were added; Sky Symphony became the headline pyrotechnic display of Vivid 2026.

This is the one you can simply turn up to and watch from the foreshore, with no ticket or booking required, which is why it is what most people picture when they think of Vivid fireworks. The other display, the on-water harbour fireworks, is a completely different thing and needs an official vessel to see properly. More on that below.

The Star-Bound Drone Show Cancelled

The Star-Bound drone show has been cancelled for the remainder of Vivid Sydney 2026. On Monday 25 May, 83 drones fell into Darling Harbour and 6 landed on the foreshore boardwalk during the 7:30pm performance, after an unforeseen change in the radio frequency environment triggered failsafe landing procedures across part of the 1,000-drone fleet. No injuries were reported.

Following technical and regulatory assessments by UK-based operator Sky Magic, Vivid Sydney confirmed on Saturday 30 May that all remaining drone shows would not proceed. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has also launched an investigation into the incident.

Sky Symphony at Darling Harbour: The Fireworks Most People Are After

Sky Symphony brings together lasers, a music score and fireworks over Cockle Bay. The final shows run on Thursday 11 June 2026, which is an extra night added recently and announced through Vivid Sydney's Instagram. There are sessions at 7:30pm and 9:30pm.

For the most explosive and immersive view, watch from the Cockle Bay foreshore. With 11 June being the last night, it is also the final chance to catch fireworks anywhere at Vivid 2026, so the foreshore fills quickly. Get there early if you want a clear sightline.

Harbour Cruise Fireworks: Official Vessels Only

The second display is the on-water main harbour fireworks. These erupt directly out of the water between Fort Denison and Athol Bay, which makes them stunning from the harbour itself but very hard to see from land. The last of the scheduled harbour fireworks go off on Thursday 11 June at 8:00pm.

The catch is that you can only view these properly from an official Vivid Sydney vessel positioned for the display. If someone has told you to book a cruise for "the Vivid fireworks", this is the display they mean, not the Darling Harbour show. It is worth knowing the difference before you book anything.

When Are the Vivid Sydney Fireworks 2026?

The fireworks occur on selected nights throughout the festival, with displays running from 28 May through to 12 June 2026. Showtimes are at 8:00pm (for cruise fireworks) and 7:30 PM & 9 PM for fireworks over the darling harbour.

The opening night of the festival on 22 May is excluded from the fireworks schedule. Outside of that, if you are planning a Thursday or Friday visit to Vivid Sydney between late May and mid-June, there is a strong chance fireworks are part of the evening.

How to See the Vivid Sydney Cruise Fireworks

The best views of the Vivid Sydney fireworks are from the water. Viewing from official harbour cruise vessels gives you an unobstructed sightline to the on-water display with the illuminated city skyline as the backdrop.

Vivid Sydney Harbour Cruises

Vivid Sydney cruises operate daily throughout the festival, providing guests with views of the light installations from the harbour while the city glows around them. On fireworks nights, cruise vessels are positioned to capture the display directly, making a harbour cruise the most complete way to experience the combination of fireworks and the festival's light projections across the Opera House sails and CBD landmarks.

Cruise options during Vivid Sydney typically cover:

  • Sightseeing cruises for a relaxed harbour circuit
  • Dinner cruises combining the festival views with a full dining experience on the water
  • Cruises with live entertainment built into the evening

For anyone who wants to see the fireworks properly, booking a cruise on a Thursday or Friday evening between 28 May and 12 June is the recommended approach. Vessels fill quickly on fireworks nights, so early booking is essential.

Vivid Sydney 2026 at a Glance

For context, here is how the fireworks fit within the broader festival:

  • Festival dates: 22 May to 13 June 2026 (23 nights)
  • Light Walk: 6.5 kilometres along the harbour foreshore, free and running nightly
  • Darling Harbour Fireworks: Selected Mondays Tuesdays Wednesdays, 28 May to 12 June, 7:30 PM & 9:00PM
  • Cruise Fireworks: Selected Thursdays and Fridays, 28 May to 12 June, 8:00pm
  • Star-Bound drone show: Cancelled for the remainder of Vivid Sydney 2026. Fireworks displays now run at Darling Harbour each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:30pm and 9:30pm in their place.
  • Vivid Fire Kitchen: Barangaroo Reserve, food and live-fire cooking
  • Daytime programming: Public art, installations, and live performances (new for 2026)

Where to Dine Before or After the Fireworks

If you are planning a fireworks night at Vivid Sydney, building a dinner reservation into the evening makes the whole experience more complete. Elements Bar and Grill Walsh Bay at Pier 8/9 on Hickson Road sits directly on the harbour foreshore, placing you at the heart of the festival precinct with harbour views from your table. The kitchen covers premium steaks, Wagyu cuts, the 72-hour sous vide beef short rib, pastas, and seafood.

Elements Bar and Grill Pyrmont at Darling Harbour is equally well-positioned for a Vivid evening, with easy walking access to the Darling Harbour fireworks and the broader Darling Harbour precinct.

Both venues are worth booking before your Vivid evening rather than after: the harbour foreshore fills quickly on festival nights, and having a table confirmed means the night is structured rather than rushed.

Reserve a table at Elements Bar and Grill for your Vivid Sydney 2026 evening.
